Remy Arab-Fuentes est doctorant contractuel à l’université Bordeaux Montaigne sous la direction de madame la professeure Nathalie Jaëck. Il travaille actuellement sur sa thèse intitulée « Joseph Conrad : l’appartenance et ses enjeux ». Il s’intéresse principalement aux questions d’influences, d’histoires, de traditions et de genres dans la littéraire britannique.

En révélant l’artificialité du paysage de Nostromo, Conrad encourage le lecteur à considérer l’enclave de Sulaco comme une mise en abyme de la fiction dans la fiction, transformant donc l’enclave de Sulaco et sa narration en hétérotopies. La relation qui unit l’enclave et le monde qui l’entoure est ainsi identifiée comme étant la même que celle qui unit la fiction et la réalité, ce qui a pour effet de promouvoir la synecdoque au rang de figure dominante dans Nostromo et préfigure une poétique moderniste de la fragmentation.

By flaunting the artificiality of the landscape of Nostromo, Conrad encourages the reader to consider the enclave of Sulaco as a mise-en-abyme of fiction within fiction, thereby turning both the enclave Sulaco and its narration into heterotopic spaces. As such, the relationship that binds the enclave and the world outside of it is proved to be the same as the one binding fiction and reality, promoting the synecdoche as the dominant figure in Nostromo and paving the way for the modernist poetics of fragmentation.
