Cet article est consacré au rôle qu’un agent double, GARBO, a joué dans l’Opération Fortitude, la grande mystification orchestrée par les Alliés afin d’induire l’Axe en erreur sur le site du débarquement de juin 1944 et de retenir les Allemands loin des côtes normandes. Ce stratagème s’appuie sur de nombreux éléments, en particulier sur Double Cross, réseau d’espions allemands passés sous contrôle britannique mais dont les allégeances demeurent parfois douteuses. Pour asseoir la crédibilité de ces agents afin qu’ils puissent un jour participer à un projet d’intoxication d’importance stratégique, les contrôleurs britanniques ont consenti pendant des années à transmettre de véritables informations aux services secrets allemands. Un dispositif très complexe fut mis en place avec une extrême précaution. Le mensonge devint véritable stratégie d’État, qui s’est avérée essentielle pour la réussite de l’offensive alliée.

This article investigates the part that GARBO, a double agent, played in Fortitude, the great deception operation orchestrated by the Allies to mislead the Axis regarding the location of the D-Day landings of June 1944, and to keep German troops away from the Normandy beaches. This stratagem relied on many elements, in particular Double Cross, a network of German spies who were turned into double agents by the British, but whose true allegiances sometimes remained doubtful. To ensure that these men and women were trusted by their German superiors so that they could one day take part in a strategic deception plan, British intelligence officers had to give true information to the German secret services for years. A very complex organization was set up and extreme precautions were required. Lying was part and parcel of the state strategy, and it was a key element for the success of the Allied landings.

Mona Parra est membre de l’équipe de recherche ILCEA4 (EA 7356) de l’Université Grenoble Alpes. Cette ancienne élève de l’ENS de Cachan a soutenu en 2015 une thèse sur la protection du renseignement britannique, américain et allemand pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Ses recherches portent sur les services secrets britanniques pendant ce conflit et leur coopération avec les agences alliées.

Mona Parra is a member of the ILCEA4 laboratory (Grenoble Alpes University). In 2015, this ENS Cachan alumna defended a PHD dissertation entitled: “The protection of British, American and German intelligence during the Second World War.” Her research focuses on the British secret services during this conflict and their cooperation with Allied intelligence agencies.
