The association between Neil Gaiman and Vertigo runs deep in the collective imagination, and is as recurring in the press as in academia. Whereas many ascribe such a strong association to the success of Gaiman’s Sandman, which was one of the few DC Comics titles from which the Vertigo imprint was born in 1993, confining this link to financial and historical matters feels somewhat reductive. In such a context, this paper explores the many connections between Gaiman and Vertigo. After examining the eerie resonances between Gaiman’s aesthetics and Vertigo’s editorial ambitions–especially as far as the treatment of boundaries is concerned, I show that these resonances between Vertigo and Gaiman do not only stem from the similarities in the contents of their production, but also from the closeness of their postures, which reinforces their association in the collective imagination.

L’association entre Neil Gaiman et Vertigo dans l’imagination collective est profonde, comme en témoignent de nombreux articles, tant de presse qu’académiques. Alors que la plupart assignent cette forte association au succès du Sandman de Gaiman, qui était l’un des quelques titres de DC Comics autour desquels le label Vertigo s’est constitué en 1993, attribuer uniquement ce lien à une question de succès commercial et de relation historique semble quelque peu réducteur. Dans un tel contexte, cet article explore les nombreuses connexions entre Gaiman et Vertigo. Après avoir examiné les résonances surprenantes entre l’esthétique Gaimanesque et les ambitions éditoriales de Vertigo (tout particulièrement en ce qui concerne le traitement des zones liminales), je m’attelle à montrer que les résonances entre Gaiman et Vertigo n’émergent pas simplement de la similarité du contenu de leurs productions, mais aussi de la proximité de leurs postures, ce qui renforce leur association dans l’imagination collective.

A graduate in English and French literatures as well as in mathematics and musicology, Fanny Geuzaine is currently pursuing her doctoral research as a F.R.S.-FNRS Research Fellow in the English Literature department of the Université catholique de Louvain (Belgium). Her research focuses on storytelling, metafiction and transmediality in the works of fiction and non-fiction of Neil Gaiman. She is particularly interested in the way popular culture reinvests tales, myths and literary traditions, and she simply loves a chilling ending to a good story – but she won’t tell anyone if you don’t.

Diplômée en littératures française et anglaise ainsi qu’en mathématiques et en musicologie, Fanny Geuzaine poursuit actuellement son doctorat en tant qu’aspirante FNRS au département de littératures de langue anglaise de l’Université catholique de Louvain (Belgique). Sa recherche porte sur les processus de storytelling, de métafiction et de transmédialité dans les œuvres fictionnelles et non-fictionnelles de l’auteur Neil Gaiman. Elle est particulièrement intéressée par les manières dont la culture populaire contemporaine réinvestit les contes, mythes et autres traditions littéraires, et elle n’aime écrire ses articles qu’à grands renforts de ronronnements et de thé.
