Après quatre premiers longs-métrages consacrés à l’Amérique du passé, The Tree of Life (2011) ouvre un nouveau cycle où, pour trois fictions, Terrence Malick s’ancre dans la contemporanéité. Ce basculement temporel marque l’apparition, dans son œuvre, d’un topos hérité de la tradition judéo-chrétienne et des théosophes d’Orient : le « désert ». Introduit explicitement comme espace spirituel dans The Tree of Life, il est repris et exploité plus à fond dans Knight of Cups (2015), conférant dès lors sa forme symbolique au récit. Cet article propose d’en étudier le sens à travers une analyse esthétique détaillée, en le rattachant, lorsque cela permet d’éclairer les films choisis, aux sources d’inspiration philosophico-théologiques, occidentales comme orientales, du cinéaste.

After four films devoted to the America of the past, The Tree of Life (2011) opens a new period in which Terrence Malick anchors himself in the contemporary world. This temporal shift coincides with the appearance, in his work, of a topos inherited from the Judeo-Christian tradition and the theosophists of the East: the “desert.” Introduced in The Tree of Life, it is taken up and further explored in Knight of Cups (2015), giving the story its symbolic form. This article sets out to study its meaning through a close aesthetic analysis, in relation to the filmmaker’s philosophical and theological sources of inspiration, deriving from both Western and Eastern traditions, and thus shedding light on his work.

Guilain Chaussard est docteur en études cinématographiques. Il a soutenu une thèse intitulée La perte, l’exil et la grâce : esthétiques de Terrence Malick en janvier 2021. Ses recherches portent plus largement sur la métaphysique, l’ordinaire et l’amour dans le cinéma américain. Il est actuellement chargé de cours à l’Université Sorbonne Nouvelle.

Guilain Chaussard holds a PhD in Cinema studies. He defended a thesis entitled Loss, Exile, and Grace: Aesthetics of Terrence Malick in January 2021. His research focuses more broadly on metaphysics, the ordinary and love in American cinema. He is currently a lecturer at Université Sorbonne Nouvelle in Paris.
