La catégorie ontologique de l’atmosphère a émergé au cours des dernières années comme une alternative potentielle aux catégories métaphysiques traditionnelles de substances, propriétés, et relations. Après avoir dessiné les grandes lignes de ce nouveau paradigme, cet article essaie de démontrer la pertinence de ce mode d’appréhension du monde dans l’œuvre littéraire de Henry James. L’intérêt de James pour la « chose scénique », en particulier après une brève période d’écriture pour le théâtre, semble indiquer un intérêt nouveau pour un domaine d’expérience qui pourrait être mieux compris en pensant en termes d’« atmosphère » ou d’« ambiance » plutôt qu’en termes de profondeur psychologique ou de relations sociales. À travers une lecture du recueil tardif de récits de voyages de James, La scène américaine, cet article espère attirer l’attention sur ce domaine d’expérience qui ne se situe ni dans la propre expérience du lecteur, ni en dehors dans la substance du texte, mais en un lieu qui précède et sous-tend la division supposée qui nous permet de parler en ces termes. Lire James de manière atmosphérique, ce que le texte de La scène américaine nous invite à faire, permet un déplacement de l’attention qui ouvre de nouvelles possibilités de lecture et d’expérience de « la vie elle-même », cette présence vacillante que James avait détectée dans sa propre lecture de l’œuvre d’Ivan Tourgueniev.

The ontological category of the atmosphere has emerged in recent years as a potential alternative to a traditional metaphysics based in substances, properties, and relations. After briefly delineating some of the main points of this new paradigm, this article attempts to make a case for the relevance of this mode of apprehending the world in the literary work of Henry James. James’s focus on “the scenic thing,” especially following a brief period of writing for the theater, seems to indicate a shift towards an interest in an area of experience that might be better understood by thinking in terms of “atmosphere” or “ambiance” rather than in terms of psychological depth or social relations. Through a reading of James’s late collection of travel writings, The American Scene, this article hopes to draw attention to a realm of experience which is located neither within the reader’s own experience nor out there in the substance of the text, but somewhere which precedes and underlies the supposed division which allows us to speak in these terms. By reading James atmospherically, as the text of The American Scene invites us to do, we may permit a shift in attention which opens up new possibilities for reading and for experiencing “life itself,” that flickering presence which James had earlier detected in his own reading of the work of Ivan Turgenev.

Sa recherche actuelle porte sur les implications écologiques de la figure de l’atmosphère dans l’œuvre de Henry James. Il est lauréat d’un B.A. en Philosophie du College of William & Mary, d’un Master en Lettres Modernes de l’Université Grenoble-Alpes, et d’un Master en Études Anglophones de l’Université Paris-Nanterre.

Henry Carmines is a doctoral student at the Université Paris-Nanterre, affiliated with the Centre de Recherches Anglophones (CREA). His current research focuses on the ecological implications of the figure of atmosphere in the work of Henry James. He has received a B.A. in Philosophy from the College of William & Mary, a Master’s Degree in French literature from the Université Grenoble-Alpes, and a Master’s Degree in English studies from the Université Paris-Nanterre.
